The company welcomes indie developers with open arms.

Microsoft has made a lot of changes to Xbox One, but this could be big news for those looking to get into independent game development.

The company confirmed that the system will in fact support self-publishing for developers. The system will act as a development kit, which means it can be used for game development and testing purposes – in the right hands, of course.

Talking with Engadget, Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten explained, “Our vision is that every person can be a creator.  That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox Live.  This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, Achievements.  This means great discoverability on Xbox Live. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”

This is clearly good news for up-and-coming game developers who were looking for an outlet to share their wares. We’ll see how the program shapes up next month.

The Xbox One will release later this year for $499.99.
