Devs from Pocketpair, the creator of the upcoming monster-catching game Palworld, have addressed fears that the title unofficially dubbed “Pokemon with guns” is a ‘scam,’ reassuring hopeful players that it is very much a real game.
On January 10, 2023, Palworld shared a Q&A post to its Discord and Steam pages, which answered frequently asked questions regarding price, crossplay, mod support, and… whether the game is a ‘scam’ or not.
“Is this game a scam? Or is it a money-making MMO or virtual currency game?” the final question in the Palworld FAQ post read. “It is not a scam and will definitely be released on January 19th,” Palworld devs responded. “Palworld is a typical Steam game, you buy it once and it is yours forever.”
They also touched on the possibility of paid expansions in Palworld’s future. “While we may consider expansions after the full release, that is a conversation we will all have together, as a community, when the time comes!” they wrote.
The fears that Palworld is too good to be true likely stem from situations like The Day Before, a multiplayer survival extraction shooter released in December 2023. It was pulled from sale just four days after its launch after being labeled a “scam” by many due to long delays, trademark disputes, and unpaid labor allegations, resulting in a heavy financial loss for the studio, which was promptly shut down.
Palworld will be released into Early Access on January 19, 2023. It will be available on PC and Xbox via Xbox Game Pass.
