Ever since its release last year, Saints Row the Third has become an unprecedented hit for THQ and the developers at Volition, introducing an open-world sandbox format while also going incredibly over the top with its silly missions and customization.  And it’s not done yet.

THQ has boasted big numbers for the game, stating that over 5.5 million people have played it thus far.  This comes from the company’s president, Jason Rubin, who tweeted the announcement over the weekend.

To further compliment it, Rubin stated that it was “the hit nobody realized was a hit!”, and though he didn’t explain sales numbers, its popularity was undeniable.  The fact it was included in this past week’s huge-selling Humble Bundle will certainly add to those numbers.

Saints Row 4 is rumored to be in development already over at Volition, but nothing has been officially announced.  We should know more about it in 2013.

Meanwhile, check out Saints Row the Third for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  It’s a blast!
