Honkai: Star Rail HDR Problems Explained

The latest Star Rail update seems to have broken something with specific devices’ HDR functions, leading to excessive brightness when users launch the game after updating it. Hoyoverse has already acknowledged the issue, and a complete fix should be arriving soon.

As they stated in their official notice, the best way to handle this issue for now is to disable your device’s native auto-HDR functionality fully. This can be done by following these steps:

  • Windows 10: Settings > Systems > Display > Brightness and Color
  • Windows 11: Settings > Systems > Display > Windows HD Color

Make sure to close your game before launching it again and see if the problems persist. If they do, try restarting your computer just to be sure, but that extra lighting should be gone as soon as you turn the HDR off. Do it as soon as you can, for your eyes’ sake.

There has not been an official statement on why this happened, leading to many speculations. The only direct mention of HDR is related to the Playstation 5 game version, but this issue seems exclusive to PC. Some users in the official Honkai: Star Rail Discord Server have theorized that maybe the game tried to implement a new HDR system, which failed horribly on a few devices.

If you haven’t noticed anything unusual in your colors after the update, chances are you won’t need to worry about that later either, so consider yourself lucky! You’re free to enjoy the many new features introduced in latest version, which were quite interesting.
