What Does the Butterfly Symbol Mean in Redfall? – Answered

As you wander around Redfall, you’ll often see all manner of graffiti and map icons popping up. Both mean that there are vampires (or at least cultists) in the vicinity. But let’s dive into precisely what both mean.

What Does the Butterfly Icon on the Map in Redfall Mean?

If you’ve seen this icon on the map, it means there’s a vampire nearby. Head towards the house that vampire is likely holed up in, and you’ll begin to hear the gross sucking and slurping noises that they love to make when they’re feeding.

This is a random event, and it’s your opportunity to grab a Blood Remnant. A Blood Remnant is a vial of vampire blood that offers a variety of unique buffs, from increased speed to the ability to permanent health buffs. They’re exceptionally useful, as your hero starts out quite frail.

To get this blood remnant, you’ll have to go into the Butterfly marked house and defeat the vampire within. Once you do so, you’ll gain access to a blue box (similar to one you’ll find in vampire nests), which contains the Blood Remnant.

What Does the Butterfly Symbol Mean for the Lore in Redfall

I’ll be honest, I love lore and world building. It’s one of my favorite parts of any game. And the butterfly has big implications in Redfall. Stop here if you don’t want any spoilers!

The Hollow Man was once a normal man named Dr. Addison. He had a proclivity for human experimentation using blood, and often used his daughter, Amelia, in those experiments. Amelia is at the heart of the butterfly symbol, as she adored butterflies. But also, because the needle that her father, Dr. Addison, used on her in his experimentation was a butterfly needle.

Dr. Addison’s experiments would eventually kill Amelia, and he was then forced to start experimenting on himself. Which led to his current form as the Hollow Man.

Now, butterflies represent in part the innocence of Amelia and the transformation of people into vampires.

If you’re not down to wait for a random butterfly symbol to spawn on your map, one of the best ways to get Blood Remnants is through nests. Check out our complete vampire nest guide here: How to Find and Destroy Vampire Nests in Redfall.
